The Counseling and Student Services department provides services in the following areas:

  • Four year plans for all students (8th – 12th)
  • Student scheduling
  • Career and college counseling
  • Individual counseling in areas of social-emotional development
  • Academic and behavioral updates for parents
  • Resources for outside career, college, or social-emotional counseling
  • Testing

Timetable for Events for Students and Parents
July / August – The counseling department is open ten days before the first day of classes each school year. The registration times for each class are posted in the Commonwealth. This will also include New Student Registration Day.

  • Senior four year plans are updated and students’ schedules are checked to make sure they are taking the classes they need for graduation.
  • Schedule changes for all students are possible during the first week of school.
  • Meetings with the seniors to begin or continue the process of college applications and the continual search for scholarships. (For more information click on Senior Newsletters or Scholarships above.)
  • College visits are scheduled with admissions counselors.
  • Juniors and seniors are encouraged to take the ACT (college entrance exam).
  • MSU dual credit representatives visit. We have dual credit opportunities in English Composition and Literature, Computer Applications, and certain Agriculture classes.
  • MAP/EOC results are reviewed from previous year.

September / October –

  • All prospective NCAA Division I or Division II athletes complete NCAA Clearinghouse forms.
  • Juniors are informed about the upcoming PSAT and the ASVAB.
  • Sophomores receive information on the PLAN.
  • Grade checks are done on all students.  Parent conferences are in October.
  • 8th grade students begin working on their four year plans.
  • Juniors take the PSAT.

November / December –

  • All juniors take the ASVAB.
  • All sophomores take the PLAN.
  • Seniors and their parents are given information on financial aid.
  • OTC sends a representative to talk to sophomores about the Career Center opportunities for them as juniors and seniors.
  • Several applications for freshman scholarships are due in December. Check with the college of your choice to verify all deadlines.

January / February

  • OTC Career Center applications are due
  • Curriculum meetings with each department are held during these months to begin building next year’s schedule
  • Grades 8 – 11 begin updating four year plans, having credit checks, and preparing for arena scheduling in March. 
  • Sophomores review their PLAN results.
  • Juniors review PSAT results.

March / April

  • EOC Testing
  • MAP Testing
  • Seniors finalize all applications and apply for local scholarships.
  • Pre-registration is finalized for grades 8 – 11.
  • Arena scheduling is done with grades 8 – 11.

May / June

The counseling department is open 10 days after the last day of school. 

  • Top five seniors prepare for graduation speeches.
  • Baccalaureate and Commencement practices are held.
  • Graduating seniors participate in Baccalaureate and Commencement.
  • All senior transcripts are finalized and sent to the colleges students have chosen.
  • Final transcripts are sent to NCAA Clearinghouse.
